Rewrite selected text in any Mac app with one shortcut.

Open source. Your AI key, or fully offline with Ollama.

Download for Mac
brew install --cask cheyako/tap/lirnyk

Free. Needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Select a draft in Mail, press ⌃⌥F, and Lirnyk rewrites it in place. ⌘Z brings the original back.

How it works

No new window and no copy-pasting into a chat. Lirnyk works where you are already typing.

  1. Select text

In any app where you can copy and paste: Mail, Slack, Notes, a browser, your code editor.

  2. Press a shortcut

Each profile has its own, like ⌃⌥F. A small bubble by the cursor shows progress. Esc cancels.

  3. Keep writing

The rewrite replaces your selection, and your clipboard is put back as it was. Changed your mind? ⌘Z.

One shortcut for each tone

Lirnyk comes with three profiles, and you can add your own. Here is the same note rewritten by each one.

the build broke again bc someone pushed w/o running tests, pls run them before pushing

Friendly⌃⌥F
Heads up, the build broke again 😅 Looks like something got pushed without running the tests. Could everyone run them before pushing? Thanks!
Corporate⌃⌥H
The build is failing again because a change was pushed without running the tests. Please make sure the test suite passes before pushing. Thank you.
Tech⌃⌥O
The build failed again. Someone pushed a change and did not run the tests. Run the tests before you push.

Add your own profiles

Add as many profiles as you like, each with its own shortcut and its own rules for the rewrite. Write the rules in plain words: the prompt sets the tone, the length, even the language.

To try a profile before you use it, paste sample text under its prompt in Settings → Profiles.

Ideas: fix grammar only, make it shorter, turn notes into a list, translate to English.

Choose which AI does the writing

Use a cloud model with your own key, or keep everything on your Mac.

Your own key

Connect OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini. Keys stay in the macOS Keychain, and each provider keeps its own key and model, so switching loses nothing.

Local with Ollama

Run a model on your own Mac. No key, no cost, and your text never leaves the computer.

ollama pull llama3.2

Text goes only to the AI you choose. Nothing is stored by Lirnyk.

Lirnyk sends the text you selected, with the profile’s prompt, only when you press a shortcut. There is no account and no Lirnyk server between you and the AI. With Ollama, nothing leaves your Mac.

Read what leaves your Mac, and when

Works great in Ukrainian

The default profiles keep the language you write in. Here is a Ukrainian message through the Corporate profile.

Questions

More help on the support page.

Why does Lirnyk need Accessibility access?

To copy your selection and paste the rewrite, Lirnyk presses ⌘C and ⌘V for you. macOS allows that only for apps with Accessibility access. Turn it on in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.

Lirnyk reads only the text you select, and only when you press a shortcut.

Which model should I choose?

Small, fast models work best for rewriting. Lirnyk suggests one for each provider: openai/gpt-4o-mini on OpenRouter, gpt-4.1-mini on OpenAI, claude-haiku-5-5 on Anthropic, gemini-2.5-flash on Gemini and llama3.2 on Ollama. Press Test in Settings to check your key and model.

Is Lirnyk free?

Yes. Lirnyk is free and open source. With your own key, the AI provider bills you for what you use at its usual rates. Local models through Ollama cost nothing.

How do I set up Ollama?
  1. Install Ollama.
  2. Pull a model in Terminal: ollama pull llama3.2.
  3. In Lirnyk’s Settings → General, choose Ollama (local) and pick the model.

No key is needed. To use Ollama on another machine in your network, change the server address in Settings.

Is Lirnyk open source?

Yes. The code is on GitHub under the GNU GPL v3. The Lirnyk name and icon are not covered by the license.
